Is your boat showing its age with a dull, faded, or discolored appearance? Don’t let engine room take away from your boat’s natural beauty. At Sunrise Marine Detailing, we offer two proven approaches to engine room detailing: a Buff and Wax service for light to moderate engine room, and a Full Restoration with sanding for boats that need deeper correction. Either way, we bring your gel coat back to life.

Bring Your Boat Back to Life

Not every boat needs the same treatment. That’s why we offer two distinct packages, so you pay for the work your boat actually needs and nothing more.

Buff and Wax is our most popular service for boats with light to moderate engine room or a dull gel coat. Using professional-grade marine compounds and polishes, we cut through the haze and restore a deep, glossy finish. Faster turnaround and more affordable than a full restoration, and the right fit for most boats in the Tampa Bay area.

Full Restoration is for boats with heavy engine room, chalky gel coat, or years of neglect. We sand to fully remove the engine room layer, then follow with multi-stage compound, polish, and a protective wax or ceramic finish. It’s the deepest correction we offer.

Not sure which one your boat needs? Send us a few photos and we’ll tell you honestly. Most boats do great with a buff and wax.

Engine Room Detailing in Tampa Bay

A clean engine room is not just about looks. It makes it easier to spot leaks, corrosion, and maintenance issues before they become expensive problems. Our engine room detailing service is popular before boat sales, surveys, and shows, but smart owners do it as part of regular maintenance.

What We Do

  • Full engine compartment degreasing
  • Bilge cleaning and deodorizing
  • Hose, wire, and fitting wipe-down
  • Corrosion treatment on metal surfaces
  • Engine block dressing (non-silicone, marine-safe)
  • Through-hull and strainer inspection and cleaning

Why Engine Room Detailing Matters

Pre-Sale and Survey Prep

A clean engine room tells a surveyor and a buyer that the boat has been well maintained. Dirty, grimy engine compartments raise red flags and can cost you on the sale price. We see this regularly with boats being listed in the Tampa Bay market.

Leak Detection

When the engine room is covered in grime, you cannot see small oil, coolant, or water leaks until they become major problems. A clean engine room makes leaks obvious the moment they start.

Corrosion Prevention

Salt air and moisture accelerate corrosion on hose clamps, electrical connections, and metal fittings. Our cleaning process removes salt deposits and we apply corrosion inhibitor to vulnerable areas.

Our Process

  1. Masking: We protect sensitive electronics, alternators, and intakes.
  2. Degreasing: Marine-safe degreaser breaks down oil, fuel residue, and salt deposits.
  3. Agitation: Hand-scrubbing of engine block, stringers, hoses, and bilge surfaces.
  4. Rinse: Controlled rinse (we do not pressure wash engine compartments).
  5. Dry: Air dry and hand towel to prevent water spots on the engine.
  6. Dress: Engine block and hoses dressed with marine-safe protectant for a clean, finished look.

Engine Room Detailing FAQ

Engine Room Detailing FAQs

A clean engine room helps you spot problems earlyOil leaks, loose bolts, worn belts, and corrosion are all easier to catch and fix when the engine room is clean. A neglected engine room hides issues until they become expensive.
Engine room pricing runs $200 to $600+Engine room detailing runs $200 to $600+ depending on engine count, access, and how dirty the compartment is. Twin-engine inboards with tight access and years of grime sit at the high end.
Degreasing is the first step, not the only stepHosing down a hot engine is not engine room detailing. We pressure-clean carefully, degrease with marine-safe products, scrub and hand-wipe surfaces, and finish with a protectant on metal and rubber components.
Diesels and gas engines need different productsDiesel soot and gas-engine grime have different chemistries. We use different degreasers and techniques for each. Mixed use cases are adjusted accordingly.
Cleaning before service makes mechanics happierIf you are planning mechanical work, detailing the engine room first makes the mechanic's job easier and often cheaper. Many mechanics appreciate working in a clean compartment.
How much does engine room detailing cost?Engine room detailing runs $200 to $600+ depending on engine configuration, access, and condition. Smaller single-engine setups are on the lower end; twin diesels with heavy grime run higher.
Do you work on both gas and diesel engines?Yes. We detail both gas and diesel engine compartments. Products and techniques differ between the two, and we adjust accordingly.
Can you detail the engine while the boat is in the water?Yes. Engine room detailing is typically done in the slip or on the lift without removing the boat from the water.
Is there any risk of water damage to the engine during cleaning? No, when done correctly. We avoid spraying high-pressure water into sensitive areas (alternator, ignition components, air intakes) and use appropriate products. Our technique is designed to clean without damaging electrical or mechanical systems.
How long does engine room detailing take?A typical engine room detail runs 2 to 4 hours. Twin-engine setups or heavily neglected compartments can run longer.
Is engine room detailing safe for my electronics?Yes. We mask all sensitive electronics before cleaning and use controlled rinsing, not pressure washing. We have detailed hundreds of engine rooms without issue.
How often should I have my engine room cleaned?Once a year is a good baseline for most boats. Before a sale or survey, always. If you notice oil or fuel buildup, sooner is better.
